High Altitude Gardening Tips

High quality compost can transform your garden. The SCRAP offers local compost all year long. Purchase it by the cubic yard or by the bag. View the most current compost prices here.

Kyla Laplante, the Summit CSA’s high altitude farming expert has prepared a variety of resources to help you garden in Summit County’s unique mountain environment. New to gardening? Read this introduction to discover what grows well at altitude.

Nancy’s Garden

Location: 83 Nancy’s Place, Frisco, CO
19 Garden Plots

Nancy’s Community Garden consists of 3 greenhouses. One greenhouse contains 19 community garden plots and the other two greenhouses are used by the Summit CSA. The greenhouses are not open to the public.

Because Nancy’s Garden is located in a greenhouse, gardeners are responsible for opening and closing the greenhouse for airflow ventilation and heat management. Each gardener commits to 20 shifts during the season which are overseen by the Garden Steering Committee. If you do not complete your 20 shifts, you DO NOT receive your $50 deposit back.

Dillon Valley Elementary (DVE) Garden

Location: 108 Deer Path Rd. Dillon CO
12 Garden Plots

The DVE Community Garden operates in partnership with Summit County Women Infants & Children (WIC), Family Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC), and Dillon Valley Elementary School. Participants exchange their volunteer time in the gardens for fresh vegetables. Educational garden workshops take place throughout the season to help participants gain knowledge in planning and planting, maintenance, and harvesting. To get involved, email the Garden Coordinator (HC3).

Leslie’s Community Garden

Location: Corner of Tenderfoot and Lake Dillon Dr. (Behind the fire station)
26 Garden Plots

Thanks to a generous donation from the Stair family and the hard work of town staff, the Town of Dillon now has a community garden to call its own. Beginning with 26, 4’x8′ raised beds, this garden is anticipated to grow over time with the development of the downtown Dillon core.

Breckenridge Garden

Location: Colorado Mountain College | 107 Denison Placer Rd.
34 Garden Plots

Who said growing food at 9,600 feet was impossible? There are 34 twelve-foot by six-foot plots at the Colorado Mountain College Campus in Breckenridge. Elevation, cold nights, and unpredictable mountain climate won’t get in the way of our short growing season. We’re happy to show off our cold-hardy veggies that make the garden explode in edible greens from May to September. To help extend the growing season, we’ve designed mini-hoop houses to protect baby plants beyond the handful of frost-free days.
